The Shocking Truth About Stress & Chronic Disease

Updated: May 24, 2019

Everyone experiences stress.

Whether it comes from work, overdue bills, a busy schedule, or something else entirely – we all experience some stress on a daily basis. Stress seems like a norm of our lives, but it’s not supposed to be that way.

Did you know that even a small amount of regular stress can put you at an increased risk for chronic disease?

In a newly released study conducted over three years, a group of scientists discovered that stress causes a significant increase in a person’s risk for chronic diseases. In fact, minor distress was shown to increase the risk of arthritis by 57%! If you think that’s bad, people with high stress levels were 110% more likely to develop arthritis compared to those with no stress.

Researchers also discovered increased risk for other diseases such as heart problems and lung disease.

Catharine Gale, a professor at the University of Southampton, was one of the researchers on this project. She said,

“Our findings show that even low levels of distress, below the level usually considered clinically significant, appear to increase the risk of developing a chronic disease, so intervention to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression may help to prevent the onset of these illnesses for some people."

So, how can you reduce stress in your life?

It is important to reduce the amount of stress we experience on a daily basis, not only for our mental health, but for our long-term physical health as well. Luckily, there are plenty of effective ways to reduce and eliminate stress!

Exercise is one main way to reduce stress.

Exercise releases natural chemicals in our brain that help stabilize our moods and make us feel better. Along with exercise, a healthy, nutrient-rich diet can help your brain lower its own stress levels.

Chiropractic care is one of the best ways to reduce and eliminate the effects of stress on your body.

Regular chiropractic care can not only reduce the physical effects of stress on the body, but it can also help you feel better and less stressed as well.
