How Much Does a Chiropractic Visit Cost?

By Dr. Ryan Lee

How much can I expect to pay for a chiropractic visit?

One of the questions we receive the most is: “What can I expect to pay for a chiropractic visit?” In the United States, the average price of a chiropractic visit is between $30 – $200 with the average ranging around $65 per visit. Most chiropractors conduct an introductory spinal exam and a physical. In addition to this, some will also take x-rays. This initial visit may cost up to $300, while other chiropractors may offer discounts on the initial visit.

Why is there such a discrepancy in price?

Just like other healthcare professionals, chiropractors use a variety of techniques to treat their patients. Some chiropractors use a small device to complete the adjustment, some use a technique that only focuses on the top of the neck, while others will adjust the entire spine and any extremities. Some of these techniques take more time than others.

In addition to the time it takes to complete the adjustments, as in any service industry, chiropractors utilize specific techniques depending on each patient’s needs. In other words, the amount of time spent is the biggest factor that accounts for the difference in price. Another factor that influences price difference is what other modalities a chiropractor can utilize included in a visit. Some Chiropractors only adjust their patients, while others may perform e-stim, decompression, ultrasound, physiotherapy, stretching, exercise and more.

Is chiropractic covered by insurance?

Every chiropractor is different when it comes to accepting insurance. Some chiropractors accept some insurance, some accept all insurance, and some accept no insurance. Typically, benefits for chiropractic care are not available until your deductible is met, which is usually very high. Not all insurance plans have a high reimbursement for chiropractic, so it is sometimes more affordable to pay in cash without having to meet a deductible.

When a chiropractor is in-network with insurance, they are restricted to modalities and treatments that the insurance provider deems necessary instead of being able to do what is best for the patient. Additionally, you are limited to the number of visits per year that your insurance company allows.

To sum it up, some practices may accept cash, some may accept insurance or a little bit of both.

Why shouldn’t I just go where my insurance reimburses?

If your insurance doesn’t reimburse chiropractors well, you may be charged the price you would pay at a cash practice regardless. Cash payments are also non-restrictive in terms allowing the chiropractor to prescribe a treatment plan to fix the root cause of patients’ health concerns, not just the symptomatology of pain. The other factors are going to be related to your expectation of time spent with the doctor, individualization of your care plan, and the quality of the experience you expect to receive.

In conclusion, you will see a variation of price at different chiropractic offices, but you should be able to expect a different experience to match! At Reach we pride ourselves on offering a pricing model and insurance acceptance options that provide our patient’s with the best experience through individual customization for each patient’s individual needs.
