Common Migraine Triggers and How to Get Rid of Them!

Are migraines keeping you from living the life you want?

You’re not alone!

According to the Migraine Research Foundation, 1 in 4 U.S. households includes someone suffering from migraines, with women being 3 times more likely to get migraines than men!

Not to mention, migraines are often classified as a chronic pain. More than 4 million people have chronic migraines, experiencing a minimum of 15 migraine days per month! That’s HALF of the month, EVERY month.

So, what exactly is migraine pain, and what triggers it?

Most people are unaware of just how debilitating migraines can be.

Serious migraines are often accompanied by one of the following symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Visual Disturbances
  • Dizziness
  • Extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell

With most attacks lasting anywhere from 4-72 hours, it is common for sufferers to need to leave work and/or social gatherings to find relief. I personally have treated many patients who started their mornings by waking up 2-3 hours before necessary just to try and get some relief before having to start their day. Not surprisingly, after having to continuously alter their way of living to accommodate this pain, many sufferers can subsequently experience depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

What things can trigger migraine pain?

While there are multiple theories on the causes of migraines, the medical community does not have a concrete reason for why migraines occur.

Still, we do know of triggers that can commonly lead to migraine pain.

Some of the most common triggers are:

  • Hormonal changes (especially in women)
  • Food triggers: alcohol, gluten, caffeine, chocolate, and lack of food or water
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Bright screens
  • Loud music
  • Weather changes

Treatments

Many people first look to medication to treat their migraines.

However, medication overuse is the most common reason why episodic migraines turn chronic.

That’s why chiropractic care is the most holistic and effective way to eliminate migraine pain at the source!

So, how does chiropractic care help?

Simply put, chiropractic care helps eliminate migraine pain by improving the structure of the cervical spine.

Something we commonly see with our migraine/headache patients is they don’t have good curvature in their neck.

We are supposed to have what is called a lordotic curvature (1st picture) in our neck. This natural curve keeps the muscles in the neck from being over strained.

However, what I am finding more and more in patients is what’s commonly referred to as “tech neck” (illustrated in the far right picture). This simply refers to having a straight neck or even worse, an opposite curved neck (one forming more of a forward facing C shape.)

(For more information on how to reverse tech neck, click here.)

This forward strain on the neck is often the result of looking down too much at our phones or sitting hunched over staring at a computer or television screen. This excess strain in the neck can result in excess pressure in the face and brian that can trigger migraines and headaches.

The use of chiropractic adjustments and spinal remodeling can put the curvature back into the cervical spine, relieving the tension that triggers migraines.

In conclusion, a high percentage of migraines are caused by subluxations of the cervical spine.

While the muscles around the cervical spine will adjust, if the subluxation is never corrected, the pain will continue to return.

We have had great success in removing these subluxations and treating patients who suffer from severe migraines!

Most recently, we highlighted a patient who said,

“My migraines were leading me into a severe depression. I had tried chiropractic care before but nothing worked. But after seeing Dr. Ryan, I’ve gone longer than I can remember without having a migraine… I’ve gotten my happiness back.”

These treatments are focused on fixing the root cause of your pain rather than just treating the symptoms.

The best and most effective way to fix the cause of your neck and shoulder pain is to visit a chiropractor who can work with you to fix the root cause of your discomfort.
