So what is vertigo?
You have probably heard the term "vertigo" used before. But you may not know exactly what it means or how it effects you.
Vertigo refers to a sense of dizziness and loss of balance.
Often, the person experiencing vertigo will either feel as if they are spinning or like the room itself is spinning. They may also feel severe nausea.
What causes vertigo?
The most common causes of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Usually triggered by specific changes in the position of your head. This might occur when you tip your head up or down, when you lie down, or when you turn over or sit up in bed.
Or by loose inner ear crystals
How does chiropractic helps with vertigo symptoms?
Chiropractic care looks at the upper cervical spine because your brain stem has a lot of feedback into how the vesicular cochlear nerve (or cranial nerve number 8 CN8) functions. It is in charge of hearing as well as your balance.
CN8 can be originated in the pons - at the level of C1 vertebra, or the base of the skull. Whenever the C1 is putting pressure onto the pons brain stem, it can cause adverse reactions of vertigo.
A chiropractor will adjust the C1 looking for subluxations, altered positions in the vertebra, and checking alignment in order to relieve stress and pressure -- thus ridding the symptoms of vertigo.
If you have BPPV your chiropractor can perform epleys manuver (click for video). This is a positional technique that a chiropractor/physical therapist/medical doctor can perform with you to put the loose inner ear crystal back into proper alignment.
